FDA Warns Consumers about Lipodissolve
Wouldn't it be great if you could have some injections of vitamins or "natural" solutions into the rolls of fat on your body and watch them disappear over just a few weeks? The premise of Lipodissolve is similar. The claims are purportedly that Lipodissolve is safe, efficient and superior to other methods including surgical liposuction.
While we'd all love it if these claims were true, the FDA sent a warning last week to six US Medical Spas to reconsider their marketing claims, specifically that Lipodissolve is safe and effective, has an outstanding safety record and that it's superior to other methods including liposuction.
The FDA then went a step further by issuing a consumer warning that the Lipodissolve products have never received an evaluation or approval by the FDA, and that the FDA cannot confirm Lipodissolve's safety or effectiveness. The FDA letter to consumers further notes side effects such as knots under the skin at areas of injection, skin damage and permanent scarring.
“We are concerned that these companies are misleading consumers,” says Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “It is important for anyone who is considering this voluntary procedure to understand that the products used to perform lipodissolve procedures are not approved by FDA for fat removal.”
The six US Med Spas were told to contact the FDA in writing within 15 business days.
