Sculptra Beats out Collagen

New York University School of Medicine in Manhattan recently released their study, showing that injectable PLLA (poly-L-lactic acid), a biodegradable synthetic product released as "Sculptra", is more effective than collagen at filling the nasolabial folds (lines from the sides of the nose down to the sides of the mouth). Nasolabial wrinkles are one of the first signs of aging.

PLLA showed a much higher level of correction than collagen according to the Wrinkle Assessment Scale, and the results lasted longer. Corrections were still visible 25 months after the last treatment.

“The results of this study demonstrate that injectable PLLA is safe and effective for the cosmetic correction of nasolabial fold wrinkles…and that the improvement is gradual and long-lasting, maintained for up to 25 months after last treatment,” stated Dr. Rhoda Narins, one of the researchers. “The efficacy of injectable PLLA will provide subjects and physicians with a new treatment option for the correction of nasolabial fold wrinkles.”

I have chosen not to use Sculptra in my practice. I prefer Artefill over Sculptra for the long-lasting product, but find that my patients still prefer the results of Juvederm and other dermal fillers even though they require more frequent visits for refills.
