| Dermabrasion
is most often used to improve the look of facial skin left
scarred by accidents or previous surgery, or to smooth out
fine facial wrinkles, such as those around the mouth. Dermabrasion
helps to "refinish" the skin's top layers through
a method of controlled surgical scraping. The treatments
soften the sharp edges of surface irregularities, giving
the skin a smoother appearance. It's also sometimes used
to remove the pre-cancerous growths called keratoses.
Dr. O’Toole uses a local
anesthetic and/or a freezing agent to render the skin numb.
Then, using a high speed rotating brush, the surgeon removes
the top layer of skin to the appropriate level for the best
results. The size and depth of scars and the degree of wrinkling
determine the length of the surgery. The skin is usually
healed sufficiently by 7-10 days to allow the use of make-up
and resumption of normal activities. However, it may take
several weeks for complete skin healing. Similar to laser
resurfacing, prolonged exposure to sunlight or severe cold
should be avoided for several months after surgery.

Men and women of all ages, from
young people to older adults, can benefit from dermabrasion.
Although older people heal more slowly, more important factors
are your skin type, coloring, and medical history. Both
dermabrasion can be performed on small areas of skin or
on the entire face. They can be used alone, or in conjunction
with other procedures such as facelift,
scar revision, or chemical
peel.
