Extended Tummy Tuck for More Thorough Improvement

For patients who are interested in gaining tighter, flatter abdominal skin and muscles through surgery, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is an invaluable procedure. In some cases, however, a more comprehensive treatment is required to achieve the best results – particularly for patients who have successfully lost a large amount of weight. Dr. Martin O'Toole offers extended tummy tuck surgery to patients from Pasadena, Beverly Hills, and other Los Angeles-area communities who want to explore more thorough body contouring alternatives.

Candidates for Extended Tummy Tuck

Extended tummy tuck surgery is most appropriate for essentially healthy adults who want to treat extraneous fat and skin on their abdomens, sides, and hips simultaneously. While a conventional tummy tuck is a very effective way to remove fat and skin from the abdomen itself, excess tissue on the sides (love handles) requires the longer incisions used in an extended tummy tuck.

Patients who have successfully lost a large amount of weight or who have been pregnant multiple times often achieve the best results with an extended tummy tuck. In some cases, other body contouring procedures may be combined with an extended tummy tuck to treat lax skin affecting the entire body all at once.

Extended Tummy Tuck – Surgery and Recovery

Extended tummy tuck surgery takes several hours. At our practice near Pasadena and Beverly Hills, the procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia to ensure your safety and comfort. The incision for an extended tummy tuck runs along the lower abdomen just above the pubis, extending around the back of the hips. Through this incision, the exposed muscles are tightened. Dr. O'Toole frequently uses liposuction to remove unwanted fat during the extended tummy tuck procedure. After separating the navel from the abdominal skin, trimming away the excess skin along the length of the incision, and making a new hole for the navel, Dr. O'Toole pulls down the abdominal skin and closes the incisions, leaving a surgical drain to help remove fluid and control swelling during recovery.

Extended tummy tuck is a more involved procedure than conventional tummy tuck, so patients generally need somewhat more time to recover. In some cases, patients choose to stay in the hospital for one night after an extended tummy tuck. Most patients rest at home and take pain medication for about two weeks after surgery. At this point, it is usually safe to return to work and to light exercise. The swelling and bruising associated with extended tummy tuck surgery usually fade within six to eight weeks, leaving the abdomen, sides, and hips much slimmer and trimmer than before.

Body Lift Surgery with Tummy Tuck

In many cases, patients who have lost significant weight are left with loose skin and residual fat deposits on many areas of the body besides the abdomen, including the buttocks, thighs, chest. Even an extended tummy tuck is not enough by itself to meet the needs of these patients. For patients who do need a more comprehensive solution, Dr. O'Toole performs an integrated body lift procedure in conjunction with the extended tummy tuck. This procedure simultaneously treats lax skin on the entire body, thus minimizing total surgical recovery time and producing better results than a series of individual surgeries would.
