Body Contouring Procedures

No matter what areas of your figure you would like to improve, Dr. O’Toole and his team have surgical solutions that can help. Choose from the following procedures to reshape your body contour:

  • Liposuction – Used to eliminate stubborn pockets of fat which have been resistant to diet and exercise, the power-assisted liposuction (PAL) technique can create a slimmer appearance in the stomach, thighs, arms, love handles, face, back, and breasts.
  • SmartLipo™ – SmartLipo uses a high-powered laser to make the fat removal process easier on the body, resulting in decreased downtime and stimulation of skin tightening.
  • Tummy Tuck – The tummy tuck procedure helps you remove excess fat and skin from the stomach area for a more toned abdominal appearance.
  • Mini Tummy Tuck – The mini tummy tuck focuses on minimizing fat and excess skin in the lower abdominal region.
  • Body Lift – Our body lift involves a more extensive version of the tummy tuck procedure, designed to remove excess skin and reshape your entire torso for a slimmer, more toned look from the upper thighs to the top of the belly.
  • Post-Bariatric Procedures – Dr. O’Toole performs post-bariatric procedures to achieve fat and skin reduction after large-volume weight loss surgeries like gastric banding and gastric bypass.
  • Mommy Makeover – Breast lift, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and other surgeries can be combined into one procedure called a mommy makeover to help women who are done having children achieve a youthful contour.
  • Arm Lift – The arm lift procedure involves removing fat and skin from the upper arms to improve tone and reduce flabbiness.

The body you’ve dreamed about is just a phone call away. Dr. O’Toole and his team are committed to delivering beautiful, natural looking results that exceed your expectations.

Questions about Body Contouring

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure that removes stubborn pockets of fat in your body to help you achieve a more toned and sculpted body contour. Dr. O’Toole will make a small incision in the treatment area. A small tube called a cannula is inserted through the incision to break up and remove unwanted fat deposits.

Am I a candidate for Liposuction?

Ideal candidates for liposuction are in good general health and near their ideal body weight, but have stubborn pockets of fat which have not responded well to diet and exercise. Patients with good skin elasticity generally achieve the best results. As with any plastic surgery procedure, it is important to have realistic expectations for the outcome.

What areas of the body can liposuction treat?

Liposuction is highly effective at removing pockets of fat from just about any region of your body. Some of the most common regions treated by liposuction include:

  • Abdomen
  • Lower back
  • Thighs
  • Upper arms
  • Chin
  • Neck
  • Buttocks
  • Hips

What is SmartLipo™?

SmartLipo™ uses laser technology to help break up and remove your unwanted fat. It is one of the safest, most effective liposuction methods available, and Dr. O’Toole can achieve very precise results. SmartLipo is much less invasive than traditional liposuction, and you will experience a much shorter recovery time. SmartLipo can also help tighten skin in areas where traditional liposuction may not be indicated.

Are there any risks associated with liposuction?

As with all surgical procedures, there are certain inherent risks associated with liposuction. Potential complications may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Contour Irregularities

In general, the risks associated with liposuction are minimal compared with other surgical procedures, and by working with a highly skilled and experienced plastic surgeon, you can further reduce these risks.

Can liposuction help me accommodate my weight loss goals?

No. Liposuction is not a tool for weight loss, and it is not a substitute for diet and exercise. It is important to achieve your weight loss goals before undergoing liposuction. Once you have reached your ideal weight, liposuction can help you further sculpt and tone your body by removing isolated pockets of fat that did not respond to your diet and exercise regimen.

Will my liposuction results be permanent?

The fat cells removed by liposuction will not return. However, it is still possible to gain weight after your procedure if you do not maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly. This weight gain may be distributed to areas of your body which did not typically store fat before your liposuction procedure. In order to avoid this, you must be diligent about your health and fitness regimen.

Should I have a full tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck?

The difference between a regular tummy tuck and a mini tummy tuck comes down to the area being reshaped. While a full tummy tuck addresses both the upper and lower belly, a mini tummy tuck tightens the area below the navel only. If you would like to tone your whole stomach, the full procedure may be your best bet. If you are only worried about the appearance of your lower stomach, the mini tummy tuck will be just as effective, and it is less invasive and less expensive. Dr. O’Toole will recommend the ideal option after a comprehensive physical examination.

Am I a candidate for abdominoplasty?

If you are at a relatively healthy weight but would like to improve the look of your stomach, you may benefit from an abdominoplasty procedure. Good candidates will have attempted weight loss and muscle toning through diet and exercise. If you have a small amount of excess fat in your tummy and a lack of abdominal muscle tone, this procedure may be the right option for you.

Do I need an abdominoplasty or liposuction?

The liposuction procedure is preferable for men and women who have excess fat in the stomach area but good abdominal muscle and skin tone. The abdominoplasty procedure is recommended for patients with surplus stomach fat, sagging skin, and poor muscle tone.

How long do the results of an abdominoplasty last?

You are encouraged to maintain a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise to keep your abdominoplasty results looking great. With no significant weight loss or pregnancy, the results of your tummy tuck or mini tummy tuck should last many years.

Why should I choose Dr. O’Toole as my abdominoplasty surgeon?

Maintaining Body Contouring Results

Following your body contouring procedure there are steps you will need to take to maintain your results. Fortunately, there is nothing very complicated about maintaining body contouring results and working in this direction often proves rewarding on many levels. During your free body contouring consultation with board-certified Los Angeles plastic surgeon Dr. Martin O’Toole, methods for maintaining results can be discussed in greater detail.

What Makes a Diet Healthy?

Every year, a number of new diet trends hit the market. However, while not without their virtues, extreme diets and food avoidances are not necessary for most people. If you are confused about food choices, working with a nutritionist can be very beneficial, but for the most part a healthy diet will simply consist of:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Complex carbohydrates
  • Lean proteins

Limiting or avoiding sugary snacks and drinks, heavily processed foods, and other clearly unhealthy choices is important as well.

Treatments such as tummy tuck surgery are very effective at eliminating stubborn fat and restoring a toned and attractive frame. Unwise food choices will undo these benefits, making it very important that you make healthy decisions if you desire lasting results.

Does Exercise Need to be Extreme?

You can enhance the results of body contouring treatments like liposuction by engaging in more progressive forms of exercise, but maintenance does not require anything extreme. In fact, taking walks, swimming, and other gentle forms of exercise are often enough to keep new fat from accumulating.

Particularly when combined with a healthy diet, getting three hours of moderate exercise every week may be all you need to maintain your body contouring results. Of course, every person is different and your personal goals need to be taken into account when deciding on an exercise plan. It can be good to work with a trainer for a period of time following your body contouring procedure to help ensure you are keeping your body in peak physical shape.
