| Are you self-conscious
about your breast size? Do you feel that they are out of
proportion with the rest of your body? If you’ve considered
enhancing your figure with breast augmentation, Dr. O’Toole
can help.
Today, breast augmentation is the
second most popular cosmetic surgical procedure
performed in the United States after liposuction.

The size and contour of the female breast can be effectively increased through breast augmentation. Some of the reasons many women choose breast augmentation are:
- To enlarge breasts which never developed to a desirable size after puberty
- To enhance breasts which lost volume and shape after weight loss or pregnancy
- To create symmetry for breasts which developed unequally
- To improve the shape of some breasts which have a tubular shape or a very high inframammary crease or other shape problems
- To enlarge what some would consider "perfectly normal" breasts to a more desired size

Silicone gel implants now approved
On November 17, 2006, the FDA approved silicone gel implants for all women aged 22 years or older. These implants have been restricted in use to breast reconstruction patients since 1992. The FDA wanted more studies done on their safety and over the past 14 years, this has been done.
Now the FDA has cleared the silicone implants made by two California companies: Allergan Corp. and Mentor Corp. Both the shells and the silicone used to fill them have been improved since the 1970s and 1980s, so that ruptures and leaks are not expected to be a problem.
Advantages of silicone gel implants
Most people feel that these implants have a more natural look and feel to them. Compared to saline-filled implants, they have less tendency to ripple in any way that can be felt or seen. They also weigh a little less than saline implants. Dr. O’Toole is now offering silicone gel breast implants as well a saline implants, which gives you more choice than before.
Dr. O’Toole will work with you to determine what type of implant and which size and shape best fits your figure. During the procedure, the implant can be placed either under the breast tissue (and over the pectoral muscle), or beneath both the breast tissue and the pectoral muscle. After surgery, your breasts will appear fuller and shapelier. Incision scars will fade and shrink over time and you’ll have a younger, more contoured shape.
