| After
pregnancy, significant weight loss or as you age, you may
notice your breast skin loses elasticity, you lose breast
tissue or your areola (the dark area around the nipple)
gets larger. A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical
procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. Mastopexy
incorporates excision of excess skin and re-suturing of
the tissue to literally lift the breast and give it a more
youthful, perky appearance. A breast lift is similar to
a breast reduction, except only the excess skin is removed,
saving breast tissue volume and compacting it to restore
breast shape and feel. Scars result, but are positioned
to minimize visibility. With time, the scars will fade and
flatten, usually producing a pleasing youthful result.

Occasionaly, breast lift is done
in conjunction with breast augmentation. In these instances,
implants are used in the same way as a standard breast enlargement,
but then the breast itself is lifted in front of the implant
to create a more full and lifted breast. This combination
will provide more fulless in the breast over time than a
lift alone will.
If you are considering a breast
lift, discuss your goals with Dr. O’Toole so that
you may reach an understanding with what can realistically
be achieved. If you are planning to still have children,
it is a good idea to wait until you no longer wish to have
any additional children.
