Pasadena and Beverly Hills-area Breast Enlargement with Implants – Before Your Surgery

Once you’ve made the choice to undergo breast enhancement surgery, you still have many exciting personal decisions to make. You’ll need to decide how large you want the implants to be, what kind of implants you want (silicone or saline), where you want the incisions to be placed, and where you want the implants to be inserted (over or under the chest muscle). Thankfully, you won’t have to make these decisions alone. Dr. Martin O’Toole, the cosmetic surgeon at Pasadena Cosmetic Surgery near Beverly Hills, can help you make these breast enlargement surgery decisions and clarify your choices about implants.

Implant Size

Contrary to popular belief, breast implants do not always look large and noticeable. Breast implants come in many sizes, and can create both subtle and dramatic looks. When you come in for a consultation at Pasadena Cosmetic Surgery, you will have the opportunity to try on the various sizes of implants available. Whether you want a subtle lift or a sexy and voluptuous look, we have an implant for you. Dr. O’Toole will help you to make your selection based on the proportions of your body and your desired result.

Implant Type

Two types of implants are available: saline and silicone. Saline implants are encased in a silicone shell and filled with sterile saline (salt water). These implants feel and look slightly less natural than silicone implants, but can be inserted through smaller incisions and may have a lower rate of capsular contracture.

Silicone implants are made of silicone gel encased in a rubber shell. Approved by the FDA in 2006, silicone implants offer a safe and more natural-feeling alternative to saline implants. These implants have been safely used by plastic surgeons in Europe and other countries for years. At our Beverly Hills and Pasadena-area practice, Dr. O’Toole offers breast enlargement surgery with either type of implants.

Incision Location

The incisions for breast enlargement surgery can be made in several discreet areas. In the inframammary approach, incisions are made in the breast folds below the breasts. Visible scarring is minimal, especially for larger breasts, and this incision location provides excellent access for Dr. O’Toole so that he can insert the implants as carefully and precisely as possible. In the periareolar approach, incisions are made along the borders of the patient’s areolas. This results in very little visible scarring and is a good choice for women with dark areolas and flattened inframammory folds. In the transaxillary approach, incisions are made in the hollows of the armpits. No visible scars will appear on the breasts, but this technique is not ideal for every woman. Dr. O’Toole can help you decide on the best incision location for you at a breast enlargement consultation at his practice.

Implant Location

Breast implants may be placed either over or underneath the chest muscle. Placing the implants behind the muscle results in the most natural look, and reduces risk of capsular contracture. However, breast implant placement in front of the muscle is often preferable for patients with natural breasts that droop or sag. This technique should only be used if the woman has enough of her own breast tissue to adequately hide the upper part of the implant. For patients with sagging breasts, a breast lift or combination breast lift/breast augmentation may be recommended.
