Post-Bariatric

There are few things more rewarding than losing weight and achieving your body goals. Weight loss allows patients to boost their confidence and improve their self-esteem while reducing the risk of weight-related health issues, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. Whether you have chosen to undergo bariatric surgery to lose the excess weight or have lost it using another method, weight loss comes with a host of benefits. Unfortunately, losing a substantial amount of weight will also result in residual skin and fat that diet and exercise alone cannot address. Pasadena surgeon Dr. Martin O’Toole specializes in post-bariatric body contouring to provide his weight loss patients with the trim and healthy body shapes they desire.

How Can Post-Bariatric Plastic Surgery Procedures Help?

Dr. O’Toole understands that each of his patients has unique body needs. Customized procedures ensure that the highest quality of results are possible and delivered. Post-bariatric body contouring involves some combination of the following procedures to tighten, firm, and sculpt your new figure.

What are your Concerns?

Recovery

Your recovery period will depend on the combination of procedures performed. Following your surgery, the areas addressed will be wrapped in compression garments. These garments are used to reduce swelling and promote blood flow. Typically, you can expect to take at least two weeks off from work to heal properly. You should refrain from any strenuous exercise for six to eight weeks; however, light walking and standing are recommended as soon as you feel able to complete these tasks. This will help with blood circulation and promote healthy and speedier healing. Dr. O’Toole will provide you with specific recommendations before your surgery to ensure a safe and timely recovery.

Cost

The cost of post-bariatric body contouring will be dependent on the combination of procedures chosen. Additional factors include anesthesia fees, surgical fees, and facility fees. Dr. O’Toole and his staff will provide you with an accurate cost estimate during your consultation.

Pain

Post-bariatric body contouring is performed under general anesthesia to ensure a painless procedure. Following your surgery, you will experience bruising and swelling that can last anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. Oral pain medication can be used in the subsequent days to combat any discomfort.

Scarring

As with any surgical procedure, there will be scarring present at the incision sites. Dr. O’Toole will do his best to make these incisions as inconspicuous as possible, and scarring should fade with time.

Results

Your results will begin to be apparent as soon as the bruising and swelling subside; however, this may take up to a couple of months. While the results for post-bariatric body contouring are known to be long lasting, if not permanent, they can be reversed with additional weight gain. The longevity of these results will depend on the individual patient. Patients should maintain a healthy lifestyle with a well-balanced diet and regular exercise routine.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Am I a good candidate for post-bariatric plastic surgery procedures?

Ideal candidates for post-bariatric body contouring are those who have lost a substantial amount of weight, typically over 100 pounds, and are currently at a stable weight. This is one of the most invasive plastic surgery procedures, and candidates should be in good general health and able to handle the physical stresses of both the procedure and the recovery time. Patients should not smoke and should have realistic expectations of their results.

  • Can I undergo this procedure before I’m at my ideal body weight?

While you can choose to have post-bariatric surgery before you have reached your ideal body weight, it is typically recommended that you wait until you have not only reached your ideal weight but have been able to maintain that weight loss. The quality of your results will be dependent on the amount of body fat present.

  • Will I lose weight during this procedure?

These procedures will remove excess skin, tissue, and fat deposits to create a more defined, shapelier contour. Though this may result in the loss of a few pounds, the amount of weight lost will not be substantial. Patients should not consider post-bariatric surgery as an alternative to weight loss.

  • What are the potential complications of these procedures?

Post-bariatric body contouring is major surgery, and while rare, potential complications can arise. These complications can include:

    • Anesthesia risks
    • Bleeding
    • Infection
    • Scarring
    • Irregular healing
    • Pain
  • Why should I combine my body contouring procedures into one surgery?

While post-bariatric body contouring may seem daunting, combining your desired procedures into one surgery will prove to be beneficial in the long run. When these procedures are combined, you only experience one recovery period. Additionally, combining these procedures can allow for better overall balance and aesthetic harmony.
