Woman rubbing her neckNew findings to be presented at the American Heart Association annual meeting in Orlando Florida, show increased risk for women who have low levels of vitamin D. According to USA Today, with16 years of data on more than 2,000 healthy, postmenopausal white women aged 45 to 58, researchers found that the 788 women with a vitamin D deficiency had more risk factors for heart disease than 1,225 women with normal levels of the vitamin. The researchers also noticed that 47% of the women who had increased heart disease risk and vitamin D deficiency were also smokers. It is not clear as to why the connection exist.15% of women who were vitamin D deficient died of a heart attack and suffered heart failure. This led to the researchers  to a preliminary conclusion that vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of heart disease for women. The article pointed out that this is preliminary information being presented at a medical conference and should not be interpreted as final definitive research.Dr. O’Toole explains to his patients who are postmenopausal that fluctuating hormone levels can have a significant impact on their health and appearance. It is not uncommon for middle-aged women to experience jowling and loose skin in the neck area that is unsightly and makes them look older than they feel.Fortunately, Dr. O’Toole is able to offer options for patients to improve the aging look of their face. Patients have many choices these days; however, they must be realistic about their expectations. Dr. O’Toole carefully explains that injectables including BOTOX® Cosmetic and fillers are temporary and will need to be repeated on a regular basis for the best results. Surgical procedures such as a facelift or brow lift are semi-permanent and that the procedures age as the patient ages. Most patients will always look younger than their real age after investing in these procedures. Patients should be cautious about laser treatments that promise extreme tightening of skin and fat injections that promise to add volume to the face. These injections can be unpredictable and over time could be more costly then having surgical procedures. Dr. O’Toole is more than happy to help patients make the right decisions for their specific situation. As an ASPS board-certified plastic surgeon he is able to offer many effective options and is held to the highest standards of the society.  It is his desire is to exceed the expectations of his patients.
