Woman with a pregnant bellyConsumers are notorious for hoping to find easy solutions to complex problems. Post pregnancy bloating and excess abdominal skin is a common problem for new mothers.  According to a recent ABC news story a new garment promises to return a woman to her prepregnancy figure.   The garment known as a belly wrap  is designed to be worn continuously after delivery. Ann Pendergist, a stay-at-home mom in New York City told “Good Morning America  that the result of wearing the wrap, for was unbelievable.  Called the Cinch, it was a girdlelike apparatus that Pendergist wore around her torso, morning, noon and night. ”You would say it’s miraculous because within a month you’re back in your pre-pregnancy jeans and you didn’t have to do anything,” she said. “It’s not like you have to diet or exercise. You get to just enjoy being a mom.” This testimonial may be a bit overzealous. Dr. O’Toole explains to patients postpartum that excess skin remaining after childbirth cannot be exercised or dieted away. Some patients will need an abdominoplasty, which not only allows Dr. O’Toole to remove the excess skin, but also allows him to tighten the muscle that is stretched during pregnancy.  This muscle can create a bulge that would not be flattened by wearing a girdle.  For some patients, Dr. O’Toole may recommend adding liposuction for better shape and contour.
