3 Minute Read:

The first thing many women and men expect to do after they undergo massive weight loss (either through natural diet and exercise or with the help of weight loss surgery, like bariatric surgery) is show off their results.

However, many people don’t realize that extreme weight loss also results in diet- and exercise-resistant fat pockets and loose skin.

This sagging skin can be unsightly and cause women and men to feel self-conscious. While the numbers on the scale may be what you want, the results aren’t visible, with the excess skin literally hiding your weight-loss transformation.

At Pasadena Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Martin O’Toole and Dr. Adam O’Toole are proud to offer several different plastic surgery procedures to help patients achieve a contoured appearance after massive weight loss

Below, we’ll explore some of these procedures and discuss the right time to undergo plastic surgery after your transformation.

What Cosmetic Procedures Can I Have After Weight Loss?

Massive weight loss does not affect everyone the same way, and pockets of stubborn subcutaneous fat and sagging skin will be found in different body parts.

Because of this, there’s no one procedure-fits-all. At your consultation, your plastic surgeon will develop a plastic surgery plan specific to you.

This plan may include one or more of the following body procedures:

  • Liposuction surgery to remove any remaining diet- and exercise-resistant fat in various parts of the body, including the stomach, hips, love handles, thighs, and arms
  • Tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) to tighten abdominal muscles, remove sagging skin, and reduce stubborn fat in the midsection (with the use of liposuction),
  • Body lift surgery to address stubborn fat and sagging skin in the abdomen, hips, thighs, and lower back
  • Arm lift surgery (brachioplasty) to remove sagging skin in the underside of the upper arms while also helping to sculpt the arms into a more attractive and contoured form
  • Thigh lift surgery to remove excess skin around the inner and outer thigh to give the legs a more natural and toned appearance

When Is the Right Time for Plastic Surgery After Weight Loss?

Undergoing massive weight loss is something to be proud of since this process requires dedication. It only makes sense that you will want to show off your full transformation (your weight loss and contoured body after cosmetic procedures) as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, you need to ensure that you and your body are prepared for these surgical procedures.

To be a candidate for post-weight-loss surgery, you need to be finished with your weight-loss journey (whether through exercise and diet or bariatric surgery). This is because continued weight loss after your plastic surgery procedure(s) can lead to additional sagging skin and other aesthetic conditions that may detract from your weight-loss results.

Additionally, you will need to maintain your weight for several months before undergoing plastic surgery to remove excess fat and sagging skin. The reason for this is that it is important to make sure that you don’t undergo weight gain after your plastic surgery procedure(s), which can negatively affect your weight loss and plastic surgery results.
