The obesity epidemic in America has put diabetes front and center as a potential risk for many Americans. According to a recent ABC news story Alec Baldwin joined the ranks of those diagnosed as prediabetic. According to the article Alec Baldwin was given the motivation to trim 30 pounds from a physique that, along with chiseled features, once earned him a place among People magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People. Pre-diabetes places Baldwin among an estimated 79 million Americans with elevated blood sugar levels that can put them at risk of chronic, life-threatening Type 2 diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. Diabetes specialists recognize pre-diabetes as a distinct entity, although “many, many primary care doctors don’t recognize it or treat it” because the lifestyle interventions that can delay or prevent it are “hard to ‘prescribe,’” said Dr. Anne Peters, director of the clinical diabetes programs at the University of Southern California. A diabetes diagnosis will not prevent the patient from being a candidate for plastic surgery; however, patients should be cleared medically by their primary care physician prior to surgery. Dr. O’Toole helps patients understand that their diabetes diagnosis may subject them to unique recovery instructions and expectations, but as an ASPS board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. O’Toole is well equipped to help patients through the surgery process. Patients who are considering procedure such as abdominoplasty, thigh lift, or brachioplasty (all of which could be post massive weight loss procedures) should be prepared for the chance of increased healing time as a result of their diabetes. Diabetic patients who are considering plastic surgery should not be discouraged by the slightly increased risk. They should use the opportunity to be sure that they choose a plastic surgeon that is well-versed and experienced in treating patients with their same diagnosis. Dr. O’Toole’s experience and reputation speak volumes in terms of his capability to serve the diabetic population well.
