Women of all ages are desiring little (or major) touch-up procedures to allow themselves to feel more confident and happy with their appearances. While there is never a “bad” time or “bad” age for women to consider surgery, there is one factor that might play a more significant role than you would imagine in determining when the right time for surgery is, and that is having children. Becoming a mother is undeniably one of the greatest joys in the lives of many women, full of beautiful moments and experiences; however, it’s no surprise that even with all of the happiness pregnancy brings, it also wreaks havoc on your body. Skin stretches, fat appears in places you never knew existed, and gravity affects most of your body. Unfortunately, this is the case for many women, even those who may have already undergone cosmetic surgery. With these changes, you may be wondering if you should wait until after having children to undergo surgery. And that’s a fair question. Here’s a look at some procedures that might be better suited for after childbirth.

Breast Augmentation

Women as young as their teens and early 20s desire breast augmentation surgery to enhance and balance their frames. While breast augmentation will not affect your pregnancy or even your ability to breastfeed (although if this is a future desire, it is best that you let your doctor know this), your augmented breasts will be susceptible to the same changes that a woman’s natural breasts are. There is a possibility of sagging or changes in the appearance or position of the implants. While this is not saying that a woman should wait until after children if augmentation is something you genuinely desire beforehand, it is important to understand that you may want a revision or breast lift down the line.

Tummy Tuck

Tummy tuck surgery can transform your abdominal area like no other cosmetic procedure can; however, as you would expect, this is an area that will be particularly affected by pregnancy and childbirth. The hormonal changes occurring in your body during this time can cause abdominal muscles to separate, skin to stretch, and fat to accumulate. A tummy tuck can address all of the changes that pregnancy brings about, and it is often considered one of the best ways to return your body to its pre-pregnancy form. This is a procedure that may be better suited to wait on since pregnancy can change any results of a previous tummy tuck. Tummy tuck surgery is one of the most extensive cosmetic procedures with a lengthy and uncomfortable recovery period; choosing to undergo this surgery only once might be the smartest decision.

Liposuction

Liposuction can successfully treat stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. This is a procedure that can easily be done whenever you desire, even if you feel it might be necessary before having children. However, just because liposuction permanently removes fat, it does not mean that fat might not accumulate again, and after having children, you may opt for additional treatment.

The Verdict Is…

Unfortunately, there isn’t a yes or no answer to this question. No surgery will prevent you from having children or affect the health of your children. You simply have to decide if you are willing to risk the additional changes, or if you would prefer to hold off until later in life. Either way, you can look forward to the stunning transformations that await you.
