Over or Under the Muscle

The two primary placement options for breast implants are over the muscle (subglandular) and under the muscle (submuscular). Subglandular placement may reduce surgical and recovery time, but is more likely to interfere with mammograms and breastfeeding. In addition, unless a significant amount of natural breast tissue is present, this placement may result in visible implant imperfections and a higher risk of implant sagging.

Submuscular placement increases surgical and recovery time, but tends to produce a more natural-looking and feeling end result. Placing implants underneath the muscles in the chest also reduces the risk of capsular contracture and minimizes interference with mammograms and breastfeeding.
