A recent increase in the number of bariatric surgeries in the United States has kindled a surge in post bariatric body contouring procedures. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons – of which Los Angeles plastic surgeon Dr. Martin O’Toole is a member – massive weight loss surgeries have resulted in an increased demand for liposuction, tummy tuck, arm lift, and breast lift surgery among others.

In a recent study released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons it was found that patients identified as obese were more likely to require emergency care following plastic surgery. The study looked at patients who had undergone tummy tuck surgery, liposuction, breast reduction, and blepharoplasty and found that those with a BMI that would quality as obese were 72 percent more likely to encounter postsurgical complications.
